Through extensive training, dietitians acquire the expertise to provide evidence-based medical nutrition therapy and nutritional counseling tailored to meet an individual’s needs. This includes a minimum of a master’s degree from an accredited university program, 1200 hours of supervised practice, and a passing score on the national board examination in order to become credentialed and obtain state licensure. In addition, continuing education hours are required to remain credentialed.
In New Hampshire and Massachusetts dietitians are the only nutrition professionals who can legally give personalized nutrition advice. Licensure protects public safety as there is no standardized requirement to call yourself a nutritionist or health coach. Working with a registered dietitian is the only way to ensure you are working with a designated nutrition expert.
Yes, I am licensed in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. I can offer nutrition counseling in many states, however, if you require medical nutrition therapy we may need to acquire licensure in your state.
